They also get more natural disaster problems with 2 volcanoes in their territory. You have to factor in transporting everything over the sea (leading to several nasty auto-resolve battles) in order to deal with your main rivals of Carthage. The most challenging Roman faction is hands down the Scipii, for one reason only-logistics. The Ceres temple is an underestimated bonus as well as it helps to grow your cities fast-meaning you can get to second tier troops faster than your opponents. Second are the Julii, they have the disadvantage of being on the border, but the territories they conquer (Gauls) are almost as good at making cash as the greek ones the Brutii conquer, and the armies there are generally easier to beat than what the other two are facing in the early game. In addition, the Mars temple’s experience bonus is the best roman religious bonus. The Brutii face off against the toughest of the initial Roman enemies in the Greeks & Macs, but the AI doesn’t handle phalanxes well and flanking is easily done, so while you’ll take more casualties per battle against them than the other romans vs their opponents, you’re also almost guaranteed the win (depending on the odds). If you want a breakdown, the easiest of the three are the Brutii-following the Senate missions will quickly have you getting more gold than you can spend in one turn (even on VH/VH mind you) and your starting territories can not be attacked by your adversaries-meaning you can afford to fail with these guys repeatedly until you get it right. Its really more about getting into position to fight your roman rivals then worrying about other factions. The interlinking of starting territories with guaranteed allies and the income all that trade brings means the campaign game is just a matter of time. For no particular reason, here’s a list of the playable factions’ campaigns in order of difficulty from easiest to hardest, IMO:ġ) The Romans, this is after all Total War Rome, not Total Numidia.
